Thermatec Sonoglass - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • What is Thermatec Sonoglass made from? Sonoglass is manufactured from 39% recycled glass and the balance is virgin glass.

  • Will it flake off or delaminate? No. Sonoglass has been tested and has passed ASTM E859 Air Erosion Tests. It is 'Greenguard certified' for use in and around schools and all public buildings. For computer rooms and the like an extra coat of adhesive can be applied if required.

  • Is Sonoglass "Biosoluble" and safe for use? YES. Sonoglass glass fibres are biosoluble and pose no health issues.

  • Is Thermatec Sonoglass VOC certified? Yes.

  • Does Thermatec Sonoglass contain any asbestos type fibres? No. Sonoglass has been tested by "Enviro Protect" and certified not to contain asbestos.

  • Does Sonoglass sustain mould growth or insect infestation? NO. Sonoglass has been tested to ASTM G 21 and does not support mould growth or insect infestation, as it is not an organic product. Important Note: This is not the case for all insulations. Some other spray-on insulations have been found to support mould growth. Some have been found to be the cause of what is refered to as "Sick Building Syndrome". See this link for more information: http://www.epa.gov/iaq/pubs/sbs.html#Biological
  • Is Sonoglass tested for Fire and Smoke? Yes. Sonoglass has been tested in Australia and is a group 1 building product (AS 3837). Zero smoke Zero flame Zero fuel contribution.

  • What are the combined thermal and acoustic benefits? As both Sonoglass and Monoglass are made from the same material, they both have thermal and acoustic properties. Each will display better performance in its own class.

  • What are Thermatec Sonoglass test results and qualification criteria? Sonoglass and Monoglass have been tested locally to standards AS1530.3, AS3837 and ASTM C518 and comply with AS 4859. RMIT University Melbourne has tested Monoglass and Sonoglass to AS ISO 11654-2002 for acoustic performance.

  • Can Thermatec Sonoglass be applied at lesser thicknesses to achieve the same R-values as batt/board insulations? In most cases yes... but some boards may perform as well at similar thicknesses. However, board
systems can often have thermal leakage where joined and around the myriad of service connections.

  • Other advantages of Thermatec Sonoglass? It is Green Building Council approved, with the added advantage of offering a combination of thermal and acoustic insulation, in one easy application.

  • Can Thermatec Sonoglass provide a finished ceiling surface? Sonoglass can be applied with an 'off-the-gun' textured finish or trimmed/tamped to provide a smoother finish. Both methods can provide a well-finished surface.

  • What colour is Thermatec Sonoglass? Sonoglass is white, offering the best reflectivity to enhance lighting in basement car parks, therefore
saving on lighting and power costs. Sonoglass can be over-sprayed post-installation to any desired colour.

  • Is Thermatec Sonoglass a seamless application? Yes. As it is spray applied, Sonoglass is seamless and provides no opportunity for thermal leakage or
deterioration of the insulation, which can often be the case with batts or board type insulations.

  • Can Thermatec Sonoglass be retrofitted? Sonoglass can be installed into existing buildings as an upgrade or renovation. It is ideal for buildings that have a lot of pre-existing services.

  • How does the scheduling of a Thermatec Sonoglass application vary from a batt and board process? Sonoglass can be installed after services have been installed. However, the cost is higher as the productivity rates are lower. The finish may also be affected by services impairing the access.

  • How does the price point and installed value compare to other methods of insulation? Sonoglass is very quick to install and therefore is very completive in the market place.

  • Can Sonoglass be recycled at the end of the building's lifecycle? Yes. Sonoglass can be recycled at the end of its life cycle and has a 25% post-consumer content.

  • What warranty dose Thermatec Sonoglass come with? A warranty of up to 25 years is offered. In Canada and USA there are applications that have been in place for over 30 years.
